B & B Building Foundation Inspection: Archaeological Monitoring. Winnipeg: The Forks Renewal Corporation

Four holes excavated by backhoe around the perimeter of the building to expose the footing for structural assessment yielded 13 artifacts from the Postcontact Period, particularly landfill operations between 1907-1915. These included an iron washer, lampshade glass, and bottle glass. The stratigraphy of each hole is discussed. Appendices include an artifact catalogue.

Heritage Resource Impact Assessment of the Tourist Hotel Site

Assessment included monitoring of geo-technical drilling, surface collection of exposed areas, sub-surface auger investigations, and backhoe excavations of a parking lot area. A brief historic background is provided from archival research. A total of 2,308 Postcontact artifacts were recovered, the earliest relating to a homestead structure standing in 1848. The following categories are represented: structural artifacts; transportation; tools and equipment; housewares; clothing and accoutrements; dinnerware; containers; food product residue; and miscellaneous. Soil stratigraphy is described in detail, and interpretation and recommendations are included. Appendices include an artifact list, photographic plates, and an artifact inventory catalogue.

Heritage Resources Impact Assessment of the Portage East Site

Assessment involved backhoe excavations of 168m of trenches, uncovering artifacts from Protocontact (AD 1650 to 1730) and Postcontact (clustering around 1880 and 1910s). Artifacts represent the following categories: lithics; Precontact ceramics; trade copper; architectural objects; lighting and manufacturing equipment; science related artifacts; communication; food procurement and processing; clothing; transportation; recreation; housewares; floral and faunal remains; storage, cooking, ornamental containers; dinnerware. Land use is briefly discussed for the: Precontact (4000 BC-AD 1737); Fur Trade (1737- 1860); Immigration & Industrialization (1860-1900); and Urban (1900-1970) periods. Stratigraphy and features (waterlines, basement foundations) are detailed. Appendices include provenience data, stratigraphic profiles, and artifact catalogue.

Impact Assessment and Archaeological Monitoring of The Forks Access Project: North of Water Avenue Project: (DlLg-77)

Monitoring of the construction of Pioneer Boulevard north from Water Avenue to connect with Lombard Street yielded 573 artifacts. Historic recoveries span the late 19th to mid-20th centuries (1872- 1950s). Stratigraphic data and artifact recoveries are discussed. Range of artifacts includes: architectural objects; structural remnants; lighting and manufacturing equipment; transportation; communication; medicine; clothing; housewares; metal, ceramic, and glass containers; bottles; dinnerware; floral and faunal remains. Containers, bottles, and dinnerware were analyzed using maker’s marks, patterns, and where possible, manufacturing firm identification.

North/South Access Road Archaeological Impact Assessment

This report details monitoring of Geo-Technical drilling and exploratory excavation, which recovered a total of 1546 artifacts. Precontact artifacts represent the following categories: ceramic; lithic; faunal remains; hearth feature; and a single human skull bone (unrelated to burial, estimated to be 400 years old). Blackduck and southwestern Manitoba ceramic traditions are identified, with an occupation estimated at 700 or 800 years ago. Postcontact artifacts dating between the late 1800s to 1920s include: architectural objects; glass and ceramic storage containers; clothing; lighting equipment; smoking equipment; recreation; transportation; faunal remains. Stratigraphy is presented. Appendices include data tables and an artifact catalogue.
